Well it can be doing that much or it'd peak at greater than 155bhp. The XU9J4 and GTI6 do without it. The V6 Ford Duratec engine has a similar system ...

What I want to know is why the buggers close off again at about 5000rpm, surely at very high revs you'd want both tracts open for maximum airflow.

Yeah I think they're like that on my 405.
